At River Beach we believe that accurate spelling is a vital part of a child’s ability to communicate through writing.

Spelling at River Beach begins with phonics, however once children have learnt more than one way of spelling a particular sound, choosing the right letter or letters requires a conscious effort to learn the accurate spelling. In KS1 we begin to teach children spelling rules and patterns as teaching how to spell high frequency words.

In KS2, the children continue to learn spelling rules as well as learning how to spell words from the statutory National Curriculum spelling lists. These lists contain a mixture of words that children use frequently in their writing and those which they often misspell.
