At River Beach we work hard in school and with parents to develop a culture of reading so that our children love reading and experience the benefits that being fluent readers bring both now and in the future. Please look here for advice on how best to support your child in reading and phonics.
This year improving reading is a focus of our School Improvement Plan.
We encourage parents and carers to come in early and D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) and are delighted how many parents do this. It is lovely to see the school buzzing before school with parents and carers reading with their children.
We are very proud of both our school library and our class libraries. Last year every class was given £500 (excluding books) to choose what they would to have in their class book corners. You can see their choices from some of the photos below. The book corners now look lovely and the feedback from our pupils is that they really enjoy using them.
There are lots of other places where pupils can read around the school. these include our beach hut in our Community Room, the Solar Dome and most recently our Reading Village. Our Garden library will be coming soon so watch this space!
We also talk to different groups of children and let them choose the books they want to read in school. This is really important in order that we buy the books our children truly want to read.
We are delighted that our P.T.A. are working so closely with us to help our pupils enjoy reading as much as possible. This Christmas, Santa funded by the P.T.A., gave every child a reading book. Needless to say the children were thrilled!
The P.T.A. also continued their support by making a Kindle the first prize in the Christmas Fayre raffle.
