River Beach

Curriculum

At River Beach Primary School, we want our children to be responsible independent individuals that have a lifelong enjoyment of learning. To support this, our curriculum is designed to be dynamic and creative. This includes a range of educational visits and visitors to the school. On immersion days, children really get to experience an aspect of their topic as well as residential trips into the great outdoors! Creative arts, such as music, drama and art, further enrich the children’s learning experience.

Please look here to see our curriculum overview for the whole year.

Below are statements about all our curriculum areas.

Art

The art curriculum at River Beach has been designed with the ultimate goal to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

We aim to provide an environment where every child will make progress and develop skills in a meaningful way. Our arts provision is ideally placed to inspire and develop creativity across the curriculum. Art is uniquely placed to inspire learning at River Beach and is an essential component in the planning of learning opportunities for all children.

How is art taught at River Beach?

Pupils develop skills across many disciplines, working in both 2 and 3 dimensions, from their initial experiences in Early Years Foundation Stage, where they are encouraged to explore different media and materials to work developed over time using specific skills and inspiration.

Drawing is at the heart of our art curriculum, where each child has a sketchbook where they can practise mark making and observational skills to build up their visual vocabulary. They learn about the skills they will need to create images and objects in a specific way and when they have had the opportunity to develop these skills, are able to create their own unique pieces.

In order to develop pupils’ critical eye and appreciation of art, pupils discover and learn about great artists, architects and designers in history and develop their understanding of the historical and cultural development of their art forms. Through discussions, self and peer assessments, pupils develop their ability to describe the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines and make links to their own work.

Above all, the teaching of art at River Beach is full of enthusiasm and love for the subject. As a representative from Artswork commented on our most recent visit; “There is a golden thread of creativity that runs through the school”.

 Computing

At River Beach we are always looking to embed in our children skills which will enhance their opportunities in the future and our computing curriculum reflects this.

Computing as a subject has the grandest of aspirations, as the Programme of Study shows;

“…a high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.”  Naace 2019

We aim to broaden their knowledge of computing requirements in the workplace and to provide equal opportunities for all children to use ICT to communicate effectively and to become digitally literate.

Through the three of the four main strands of the computing curriculum which encompasses coding, information technology and digital literacy, our children develop computational, creative thinking and problem solving skills.

We passionately believe that everyone wherever they are from has a right to be safe online and that a safer internet is down to each one of us. Therefore online safety is taught regularly and through a wide range of materials specifically chosen to engage the children, give them opportunities for discussion and make them think!

Design and Technology

At River Beach Primary School, Design and Technology is a subject designed to open the door on the outside world. We want our children to develop a curiosity and an enquiring mind about how things work, how they are built and their ultimate purpose. Our curriculum allows opportunities for children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

Our design briefs allow children to have the opportunity to take risks safely and try things out. We want children to be able to choose appropriate materials for a set task, have the necessary skills to use tools effectively and adopt a trial and improvement mindset to develop an effective product.

Through a range of activities and visits, we want to use Design and Technology to showcase the  range of careers, trades and life-skills that our children can aspire to.

English

Talk for Writing

One approach to writing we use at River Beach Primary school is Talk for Writing. We want all our children to develop into thoughtful readers and creative writers and it is through the Talk for Writing approach that we believe we can achieve this. Through its multi-sensory and interactive teaching it enables children of all ages and abilities to learn to write a wide range of story/text types using various methods.

Talk for writing was developed by the author Pie Corbett. It is a fun, creative yet rigorous approach to developing writing.

Talk for Writing starts with enjoying and sharing stories. Throughout the school we place a strong emphasis on children reading stories and enjoying a range of literature.

Through regular reading, we want children to build up a rich an extensive vocabulary for their own writing.

During the initial ‘imitation’ stage of Talk for Writing children learn to tell a story off by heart. They retell a story with expression and actions and use a story map to support their retelling of the story.

Once the story is learnt the children are encouraged to adapt it, this is the ‘innovation’ stage where they make the story their own, for example changing the setting or character. The final stage is the ‘invention’, this is where the children write their own text independently.

Reading

At River Beach we aim to foster a deep and lifelong love of books and reading in every child. Our goal is for children to leave us not just as fluent readers but also with a deep-rooted passion for books and literature.

We believe that a child’s ability to read confidently and proficiently will empower them across all areas of the curriculum and their wider life and so consider reading as central to everything we do.

We have built our curriculum around our belief that all children have the right to experience high quality literature and the works of significant authors and story-tellers.

Reading at River Beach begins with high quality phonics teaching s in Early Years and Key Stage 1 where children learn to link sounds to the letters and groups of letters and decode by  blending these sounds together. In the the lower years we also have a strong focus on reading fluency and children read aloud regularly.

Yet, we believe that for children to become avid and accomplished readers there must also be a focus on reading for meanings from the start. Whilst they are learning to read through phonics, children at River Beach are also developing the skills of inference and comprehension that will ensure that become avid, life-long readers.

As children progress through the school their knowledge, vocabulary and love of reading grows and they are immersed in our reading culture. Reading is our passion at River Beach and it is the thread that runs through everything that we do.

Geography

At River Beach, geography inspires a curiosity to discover the world and its people.

Children use a variety of maps, both digital and book based to discover the world and compare places both now and over time.

Children explore human and physical geography in order to deepen their understanding of where they live and how it compares to the rest of the world.

We take full advantage of being in a unique location near both a river and a beach (hence our school name). Children learn how their own life at the seaside differs to other locations across the world.

History

Studying history gives our pupils the opportunity to develop an understanding of why the world and its people are how they are today. Our history curriculum has a key focus on British history and at River Beach, history is taught through both investigation and enquiry. This allows our children to develop an understanding of how History has had an impact on our lives today both locally, nationally and internationally.

We believe History should be an interactive subject that will ignite a child’s natural curiosity, and therefore allow children the opportunity to investigate, handle artefacts, use pictorial evidence, watch historical evidence and visit relevant sites and museums.

At present our curriculum provides a rich variety of topics and allows children to make links with what they are learning and Littlehampton and the surrounding areas.

Maths

River Beach follows the Inspire Maths programme of study.

Inspire Maths is a whole-school primary maths curriculum, based on Singapore’s number 1 maths series. It provides everything needed to support a mastery approach to mathematics and meet the higher expectations of the 2014 National Curriculum.

Inspire provides a highly scaffolded learning framework, centred on problem solving. At its heart is a spiral curriculum that continuously builds and consolidates knowledge as children move up through the school. This enables children to reach a deep level of understanding, which in combination with extensive practise, develops fluency and mastery.

MFL (Modern Foreign Languages)

At River Beach Primary School, we are passionate about celebrating the different cultures that we are fortunate to have within our school and local community.

Our vision is that all children become enthusiastic language learners and develop skills and confidence to become curious and interested in other countries.

We believe in the importance of celebrating different ideas and traditions and bringing the wider world closer to home.

Music

River Beach Primary is proud to be a creative school. We aim to provide children with a range of inclusive opportunities to discover and develop their musical or dramatic skills and widen their cultural understanding. Our highly-resourced music studio provides a brilliant environment for children to enjoy exploring instruments and develop precise listening skills. We understand that good music teaching can help children to establish the foundations of essential life skills, such as expressing oneself clearly and confidently.

Most importantly, we want the children at River Beach to leave primary school with a love of music, realising that it is something they can be part of.

PE

At River Beach, our PE curriculum is as broad and varied as possible so that all children experience a wide range of sports and physical activities in which they are inspired to participate and succeed.

Whilst engaging in sporting activities, the children will have the opportunity to be competitive, demonstrate fair play and experience playing as part of a team. We want our children to show respect and determination and enjoy physical activity.

As a school, we successfully participate in a vast number of tournaments and competitions both within the local community and further afield. Through the inclusive nature of our teaching, we ensure that all children have opportunities to take part at their own level, whilst encouraging them to excel in their chosen area.

We teach the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle, giving our children the skills and knowledge to continue their journey sport beyond school.

Phonics

At River Beach Primary School learning to become a confident reader is very important, because we recognize that children who can read confidently and proficiently will enjoy reading and this will help their learning in all of the other areas of the curriculum as well as give them pleasure and enjoyment.

Click on the logo above to listen to the pronunciation of all the sounds your child will learn in Read Write Inc.

At River Beach we use the Read Write Inc (RWInc) programme to get children off to a flying start with their reading and writing. RWInc is a method of learning centred round letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to help children in their reading and writing.

Reading opens the door to learning. A child who reads a lot will become a good reader. A good reader will be able to read more challenging material. A child who reads challenging material is a child who will learn. The more a child learns, the more he or she will want to find out.

Using RWInc, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.

When using RWInc to read the children will:

• learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts.

• learn to read by sounding out words or using ‘Fred talk’

• read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out

• show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions

We have created this handy booklet to help you support your child’s learning of Phonics.

PSHE

At River Beach Primary School, we believe in the importance of positive behaviour and good relationships with others, which ultimately contribute to a happy, healthy and successful life. These are key to developing self-respect, self-control, pride and confidence in an individual.

We believe that children should have time in class to explicitly learn how to build positive relationships and how they play a vital role in developing empathy and a positive emotional well-being. We want to nurture goodness, happiness and positivity throughout our curriculum, as well as the whole school day in order to give our children the best start in life.

Religious Education

Our enquiry based approach to Religious Education is built on children’s prior knowledge and understanding, promoting respect, empathy, self-awareness and reflection.  Religious Education contributes to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all children and their understanding of life in modern Britain. It is an important part of a child’s education, enabling them to reflect on their own beliefs, values and opinions and those of others.  It helps them to understand the place of religion in the world, and how this shapes the way people live their lives.

 Science

Science is a vibrant subject at River Beach about which we are incredibly passionate. Children have lots of questions about the world around us and we aim to provide them with the necessary core scientific knowledge and investigative skills to answer their questions about those processes.

Our curriculum provides a rich variety of topics that cover all the core scientific skills and contexts that the children can relate to their everyday lives. Children are given the opportunity to generate their own scientific lines of enquiry and explore using a variety of investigative skills: becoming more familiar with each of the elements of the scientific method as they progress through the school. These include skills such as developing their own lines of enquiry, making predictions, observing changes over time, drawing conclusions from their observations, collecting results in a variety of ways, analysing results and evaluating their own method and the reliability of their results. Children are taught how their mathematical calculation and statistical skills can be used to read, analyse and draw conclusions from their results. Underpinning this is an emphasis on children actively utilizing the classroom, wider school environment and the local environment and community. There are also opportunities for children to improve their literacy skills through reading, writing and spelling key vocabulary as each year group has a science focus topic, linking their skills across the curriculum.

Situated between the South Downs National Park and the English Channel, we are lucky to have a range of science focused venues and opportunities for practical field work on our doorstep. We’re constantly looking for new and meaningful experiences that will enrich the scientific understanding and investigative skills of the children we teach. At River Beach, we actively encourage children to continue their investigations at home within the local environment, and even try some new ones.
